Echeveria x 'Mahogany Rose'D. Wright
One of the many magnificent Californian hybrids raised by Dick Wright in the early 1970's. It is a neat compact plant with wonderfully coloured leaves in mahogany red suffused with pink and edged with flame red.
The inflorescence comprises a short sturdy stem bearing a cluster of fabulous, spotted flowers somewhat like an orchid.
The whole makes for an attractive compact plant, the one in the middle pic. reached a height of 55 cm overall.
It would appear to be a winter flowering plant as far as is the case for my plants, none have bloomed in the summer during the last 20 years or so.

CULTIVATION: Fairly easy tolerant of minimum winter temperatures of 3ºC to 5ºC providing it is dry with moving air with only minimum water given. An electric fan heater is ideal. Usual C&S compost.
Over 5ºC more water can be given, together with good light, the plant will respond and produce its gorgeous flowers.
In the summer the plant colours are intensified and the rosette looks like a rose bloom it is named after.

PROPAGATION: A little difficult, offspring can be produced from :-
1. The flowering stem method. It is necessary to remove all the flower buds as they form, then carefully remove the stem and cut into several pieces each with some leaves, allow to dry for a day then plant in a very sandy compost and wait!!
2. Small leaves; from near the top of the rosette.
3. Offsets; difficult as production of these is rare.
4. Beheading; root the rosette and hope for stem offsets to be produced.
