Tylecodon paniculata Toelken
Previously named Cotyledon paniculata.

Location: Namibia, S. Africa Cape Province.
C.P., Laingsburg- Vleiland 1987 Lavranos.
A small tree in maturity, here a Winter grower which flowers in early summer. My small plant tried to flower last year (2002) but disappointingly gave up.
The flowers should have been red- brown on a 30/60 cm stem, perhaps we will have better luck this year. The plant's main feature is it's swollen stem with attractive peeling bark.
In our Summer it is completely dormant and should be given a rest.

CULTIVATION: is easy using a well drained, C & S compost and given good light. In the growing season water when the roots are almost dry, no water in the Summer. Winter minimum temperature is 5ºC but better at 10ºC. The leaves drop off in late Spring - early Summer when the plant should flower. Re pot every year using the above compost with added slow release fertiliser.

PROPAGATION: from cuttings in late Autumn.

CAUTION: Tylecodon caudex's contain the poison 'cotyledontoxin' that can kill, if eaten by animals.
