Jovibarba
heuffelii var. Pink Skies
A very vigorous, hardy and colourful member of
the Sempervivoideae subfamily - a variety of J. heuffelii which comes from S.
E. Europe / Balkans. This is a choice, moderate growing plant, increasing by
branching rather than producing offsets. The pink/ bronze leaves are attractive
all the year round. Easy to flower, the largest rosette in the above picture
is forming a typical inflorescence, which flowered three weeks later with yellow
flowers.
Cultivation
is simple :- outside in full light, minimal water, all temperatures from hard
frost to summer heat, full light no overhead shade at any time. It is
possible to grow the plants in well drained garden soil if pests and weeds can
be kept at bay.
I personally
think they are better in pans where control of moss and weeds is easier. Propagation
is by division of non flowering rosettes in July / August. The leaf colours
are spoilt under glass in summer unless an Alpine house is available.
