Jovibarba
heuffelii var. Sundancer
Another very hardy and colourful member of the
Sempervivoideae subfamily - a variety of J. heuffelii which comes from S. E.
Europe / Balkans. This is a choice, slow growing plant, increasing by branching
rather than producing offsets. The red and green leaves are attractive all the
year round. This plant has not yet flowered in the 30 years I have had my Jovibarba's.
I hope to add a picture of the plant in flower when the grand day occurs.
Cultivation
is simple :- outside in full light, minimal water, all temperatures from hard
frost to summer heat, full light no overhead shade at any time. It is
possible to grow the plants in well drained garden soil if pests and weeds can
be kept at bay.
I personally
think they are better in pans where control of moss and weeds is easier. Propagation
is by division of non flowering rosettes in July / August. The leaf colours
are spoilt under glass in summer unless an Alpine house is available.
