Cotyledon tormentosa ssp Ladismithensis

Cotyledon tormentosa Ladismithensis
There appears to be some uncertainty about the exact name of this plant. Various sources describe it as :-
Cotyledon ladismithensis
Cotyledon ladismithiensis
Cotyledon tormentosa
Two common names are cub's paws and bears paws.
Whatever the name, this is an attractive species which is fairly easy to grow. The plant opposite is one I bought last year to replace my original plant which died of winter cold and damp. I keep this one in the propagator from December to March.
The plant is highly succulent with scalloped plump leaves and attractive teeth on the margins. The whole plant is covered with fine hairs which help to prevent evaporation and retain water during periods of drought.
Watering, therefore, should be kept to the least possible at all times especially in the short dark days of winter. Temperatures should be 8ºC minimum, preferably 15ºC. Requires the best light available.
Propagation by cuttings in Spring or Summer.

Details of the flowers are on the next sub page.
