Huernia striata Oberm.
From S. W. Africa this small compact plant likes it warm to hot. I make sure that at least one of these plants is kept in my propagator where the temperature never drops below 15° C. No seed horns have developed as yet but may do in time.
Cultivation is moderately difficult so I use the safe compost mix i.e., 60% very coarse sand plus loam and slow release fertiliser making up the balance of

rich well drained soil in the bottom half of the pot tapering to pure sandy grit at the top. Propagation is easy from cuttings taken in the summer. Winter care is no problem at 15°C with plenty of light and virtually no water or damp. Re pot every 2 years using the standard stapeliad technique and starting with small plants. The flowers are very attractive measuring 14-17 mm Ø the tube is 6 mm long and is a maroon colour.
